Have you heard about our 2018 summer Juvéderm Voluma® XC special? What better time of year than summer to restore a more youthful appearance to your skin? This July, we’re offering an incredible special on our Voluma® treatment that will allow you to give your face a healthy lift at a lesser cost. We’re giving you $100 off per syringe, starting July 1st and lasting through August 15 this year. What is Juvéderm Voluma® XC?Voluma® is a nonsurgical procedure that restores volume to the cheek area. This treatment can bring back a more youthful face profile that can last up to two years. Our professional dermatologists inject a gel filler deep under your skin to help lift, contour, and add volume to your cheeks. Our gel fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in your body that works to provide volume as well as give hydration and nutrients to your skin cells. When you have a healthy amount of this acid in your skin, it has elasticity and smoothness. As our bodies age (and as a result of sunshine and a number of other factors), this hyaluronic acid (HA) begins to decrease and our skin begins to lose its youthful volume. This results in flattened and sagging cheeks, as well as added wrinkles and folds. Our Voluma® dermal fillers are available to adults over the age of 21. The number of syringes you will need for your treatment will depend on things like your age and genetics and ultimately the goals you have in mind for the appearance you hope to achieve. For those who only have minimum sagging, as little as just one syringe can provide incredible results that are instant and long-lasting If you are interested in learning about how Voluma® could work for you and want to take advantage of our summer Juvéderm Voluma® XC special, call us at 970-673-1155 or request your appointment through our website. Our Juvéderm Voluma® treatment is available at three convenient Northern Colorado locations: Loveland, Greeley, and Fort Collins. Those hot summer days are quickly approaching and families are getting excited about all those hours spent outdoors. There’s so much to love about summer, from camping to days at Horsetooth Reservoir, water fights in the backyard to bike rides on a beautiful Colorado trail. Unfortunately, all this time in the sun can end up being really harmful to your skin if you do not take the necessary precautions. Also, don’t forget that sun protection is not just necessary in the summer. In a state that’s known for having so many sunny days throughout the year, it’s highly important that you remember to wear your sunscreen in Colorado. Why Should I Wear Sunscreen Daily?Just because you are not coming home with a blistering sunburn does not mean your skin is protected from harmful UV rays. Many people do not realize how important it is to wear sunscreen every day, whether or not you plan to spend much time outside. Even if you are only exposed to the sunshine during short errands, rides in your car, or even sunlight coming through your office window, it’s important to always wear sunscreen in Colorado to protect your skin. Harmful UV rays penetrate windows and even certain clothes. Even when the sun may not even feel that hot to you, UV rays are present. Unless you are spending your days in a room without windows, applying sunscreen needs to be part of your daily routine to keep your skin healthy. Does Higher Elevation Mean More UV Exposure?Visitors to Colorado have often commented on how quickly they get a sunburn in our state. You may believe you are used to the sun’s intensity here, but remember, because of the higher elevation, there’s increased ultraviolet exposure. Not only does the thinner Colorado air filter out less of the UV rays, UV exposure increases by 4-5% for every 1000 feet increase in elevation, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Because many Coloradoans love living active lifestyles with all kinds of outdoor activities, sunscreen is absolutely vital to not only protect you from sunburns but also from longer-term skin issues like premature aging and skin cancer. Do I Need Sunscreen on a Cloudy Day in Colorado?Don’t be deceived by those clouds in the sky. Unfortunately, the clouds won’t always hinder the harmful UV rays we’re concerned about. Did you know that while clouds sometimes hinder UV rays, they can actually increase UV levels as well? That means on some cloudy days, your skin will be even more exposed to harmful UV rays than normal. Whether it’s sunny or cloudy, put on your sunscreen. Why Should I Wear Sunscreen in the Winter? You may be faithful in lathering on the sunscreen all summer long until the colder days start coming. However, did you know that UV rays don’t stop just because summer has ended? Ultraviolet A rays (UVA) stay around all year long. These are the rays that cause skin damage, including wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer. Remember, too, that at higher elevations in Colorado in the winter, even sunburns can still happen (on a ski trip, for example, when the bright sunshine is reflecting off the snow). Can I Just Apply Sunscreen at the Start of my Day?If you are spending time out in the sun, your sunscreen is effective on average for only 2 to 3 hours. Also, if you are swimming, sweating, or drying off with a towel and neglect to reapply, you will only be protected for so long. When swimming, you should be reapplying even your waterproof sunscreen at least every two hours. If you have to be outdoors during the hottest hours of the day, reapply sunscreen as often as every hour, if possible. What is the Minimum SPF I Should Wear in Colorado? It’s always best to get sunscreen products with a higher SPF for the greatest protection. The minimum SPF you need in your sunscreen also depends on your skin type and how sensitive it is. People with fairer, more sensitive skin types should get a sunscreen with no less than SPF 30. Someone with less sensitive skin that tans easily can use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Also, how you apply your sunscreen will determine how well you are protected. Make sure you are using enough, according to the instructions on the label. Not applying the right amount means you are not getting the level of SPF you should be wearing. Keep in mind as well that even if you have a high SPF sunscreen but it’s expired, it may not give you the protection you need. Additional Sun Safety TipsWearing sunscreen in Colorado or any other state throughout the year is key to keeping your skin healthy, young, and beautiful. Make sure you choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen. If possible, avoid spending long amounts of time in the sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun is at its highest intensity. In addition to sunscreen, it’s important to wear UV protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Via https://frontrangedermatology.net/may-2018-dermatology-special/ I’m sure you have heard by now about the damage UV rays can do to your skin, from premature aging to skin cancer. Unfortunately, many people often tend to forget to protect their skin unless they’re spending a day at the beach or pool. Remember that your skin can get harmful sun exposure even when you’re not outside all day long, and UV rays don’t go away in the winter! You have probably heard about wearing UV-blocking clothing. But does it really work? The simple answer is, yes. The most effective way to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is to wear sun-safe clothing. The more of your skin you’re able to cover, the better. This also includes wearing a hat and sunglasses when you’re spending time outdoors! What Types of Clothing Are Sun-safe?Obviously, not every type of clothing is going to serve as good protection from the sun. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that pants are going to be more protective than shorts. It also shouldn’t take much to realize that different fabrics are going to be more protective than others. While you may be wearing something with long sleeves, it won’t be as effective if it’s made with a loosely woven fabric that the sun can easily penetrate. The tighter knit the fabric, the more protection it will provide for your skin. UV Rays and the Color of Your ClothesEver thought the color of your clothing could affect the amounts of UV rays getting through? Did you know that darker fabrics absorb more UV rays than lighter ones? Also, the brighter and richer the color, the more ability the fabric has to absorb UV rays before it hits your skin. Clothing with UPF LabelsHave you ever seen the letters, UPF on clothing labels? This stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. This is the sun-protection rating for clothing, as SPF is to cosmetics and sunscreens. UPF is the measurement of the amount of UVA and UVB radiation that is able to get through the clothing to your skin. UPF labels on clothing normally run from 15 (good) to 50 (excellent). When you are looking for clothing, instead of trying to figure out how protective it will be just by feeling the fabric or holding it up to the light (which unfortunately is not a good way to measure UV protection), it’s helpful to find pieces that include the UPF rating on the label. Sadly, not all brands carry this rating. Remember that fabrics like denim, even if there is no UPF label, are going to offer more sun protection than others. When looking for clothing with the UPF label, try finding pieces with a UPF of 30 or more. Choosing Your Sun-protection Head GearWhen choosing a hat to provide protection from the sun, try finding a wide-brimmed hat (with a brim of 3-inches or greater) that will protect not only your head but the tops of your ears and the back of your neck. This will help cover some of those areas that are much harder to protect with sunscreen. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses with bigger lenses to cover a greater area around your eyes. When you protect your eyes from being exposed to the sun for large amounts of time, you reduce your risk of getting certain kinds of eye diseases. Do I Still Need Sunscreen?Even when you are doing your best to wear UV-blocking clothing, don’t forget sunscreen for the areas that are not protected. More than likely, you are not going to be covered from head to toe with sun-safe clothing. Apply sunscreen to areas that are exposed, like your face and neck, and also under clothing pieces that won’t provide enough protection. The post Does UV-blocking Clothing Really Work? appeared first on Front Range Dermatology Associates. Via https://frontrangedermatology.net/does-uv-blocking-clothing-work/ More than likely, sunscreen is not at the top of your mind of necessities in your skin care routine during the winter months. What you may not realize, however, is that damaging UV rays don’t stop when summer ends. While you are less likely to get a visible sunburn during the winter, harmful UV rays are still coming into contact with your skin. Ultraviolet B rays (UVB), the UV rays that cause the redness of a sunburn, are not as prevalent in the winter (though you could still get a winter sunburn in higher altitudes like you’ll find here in Colorado!). However, Ultraviolet A rays (UVA) never go away, no matter the season. These UV rays penetrate your skin deeper than UVB rays and are responsible for skin damage like age spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Even a cloudy day or the fact that you will only be watching the weather from indoors is no excuse for neglecting to apply sunscreen. Clouds and your glass windows unfortunately will not hinder UVA rays from penetrating through to your skin. Summer or winter, cloudy or sunny, applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen is a choice you will want to make in order to keep your skin from premature aging. At Front Range Dermatology Associates, we’re ready to help you do what is best for your skin. Via https://frontrangedermatology.net/need-wear-sunscreen-winter/ Peel-off charcoal masks have been the rage for while. People all over the country are trying them, hoping to rejuvenate dull skin and clean out their clogged pores. If one of your greatest skin troubles has been blackheads, you can probably relate and have tried peel-off charcoal masks yourself. It’s true…you will find numerous videos that seem to show positive results. But are these charcoal masks really that effective and good for your skin? They do provide results…temporarily.Charcoal masks are especially popular because they definitely seem to provide immediate results. Whether you have personally tried the mask yourself or have watched a video, you are able to see some of the build up in your pores come out as the mask is removed. This, obviously, makes it feel like the mask is accomplishing what you want it to. The unfortunate reality is, however, that there is still much more to a blackhead than you can actually see on your skin’s surface. The reason you have the tiny black spots on your skin is because when the built-up mixture of oil, bacteria, and skin cells is exposed to the air, those tiny areas oxidize and turn black. However, there is still more impurity build up in your pores beyond the black spots you can see. A charcoal mask can remove that top layer of oxidized skin impurities, but it is not dealing with the root issue. So while you may appreciate the immediate results you get when you use a charcoal mask, don’t be surprised when your blackheads are back in a short amount of time (probably within 30 days). Is the peeling-off part good for your skin? The peel-off charcoal masks obviously stick to more than just your blackheads. Obviously, the glue won’t know to just attack those tiny problem areas! When the mask is removed, it can potentially take with it small hairs as well as the natural oils your skin produces for protection. Not only that, but these masks can actually tear off a surface layer of skin. While people with more oily prone skin may find this mask appealing, remember that removing all the oils your skin naturally produces as a protective barrier could actually bring more problems. At the least, you may suffer dry or irritated skin when you use a peel-off charcoal mask. What are some alternatives to charcoal masks? Our goal isn’t to discourage you from obtaining the radiant skin you’ve been wanting for so long. However, there are alternatives that are much healthier for your skin that we would suggest you try. One of the things you can use is an approved over-the-counter retinol, which works to encourage your surface skin cells to turn over more quickly and help new cells grow. At the same time, a retinol will work to keep your skin from getting clogged. This will obviously result in more radiant, clean, and healthy looking skin over time. If you are looking for faster results, you can get a special retinoid prescribed by your dermatologist. Another alternative to a peel-off charcoal mask is a professional chemical peel that you can get at your dermatologist. You can also find safe, approved home peels that won’t damage your skin but help improve clarity and radiance. Don’t waste your money. You do not have to waste your money on the latest fad to get the beautiful results your skin needs. And remember, just because something appears to be working does not mean it is producing lasting results or that it is safe for your skin. Always talk to your dermatologists for their recommendations for your skin care needs. At Front Range Dermatology, we offer a number of different treatments to help keep your skin clear and youthful. If you are searching for a solution, please contact us today. The post Do Peel-off Charcoal Masks Really Work? appeared first on Front Range Dermatology Associates. Via https://frontrangedermatology.net/charcoal-masks-really-work/ It probably is not news to you to know that your skin is the largest organ of your body. And if you are joining the numbers of people who are becoming more health conscious in many areas of their lives, you care about what you put on your skin. Many are turning to products that are known for being organic, paraben-free, botanical, and all-natural. While all-natural products are not always the best solution for certain types of skin conditions, many natural skin care products can be beneficial for your skin. Here are just a few that you could incorporate into your daily routine. Coconut OilIt probably is no surprise that this made it onto our list! Coconut oil is filled with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and is used to treat a number of different conditions. One incredibly effective use for coconut oil is hydrating your dry skin. It can be an excellent treatment for eczema patients as well as it works to decrease staphylococcal colonization. It is also a great, gentle moisturizer to use on the areas around your eyes to help reduce the appearance of fine lines. Additionally, coconut oil is used to remove makeup, treat scars, and even prevent razor burns. Topical ArnicaThis is a herbaceous plant from the sunflower family and can be used to treat skin that bruises easily. One of the products we recommend that contains Topical Arnica is DerMend cream, an over-the-counter product you can find at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart. Topical Arnica has also been known to improve the appearance of skin discoloration, including dark circles under your eyes. Topical Arnica oils have been used to reduce pain and inflammation as well as relieve stiffness and even arthritis flare-ups. Shea ButterShea butter is an excellent moisturizer, especially beneficial for dry and sensitive skin when applied in it’s raw, pure, and unrefined form. Loaded with vitamin E, necessary fatty acids, and plant antioxidants, shea butter is known to help restore elasticity in the skin and helps to lock in moisture. It can also be used as a lip balm to soothe dry, chapped lips. Raw HoneyWhile just any honey from the store won’t carry the same nutrients, a natural, raw honey that has not been heated, processed, or pasteurized is filled with nutrients, vitamins, and enzymes. Raw honey can be used to help reduce acne breakouts and is also a great moisturizer (don’t worry, you do wash it off!). Other uses include treating scars, healing wounds, and fighting allergies. Polypodium Leucotomos ExtractThis extract comes from a fern grown in the rainforests of Central and South America. Its antioxidants help to protect against the effects of free radicals. According to one study, supplementing orally with Polypodium Leucotomos helped to reduce sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. You can find it in a supplement called Heliocareâ at Walgreens and Walmart. It should not be used as a substitute for sunscreen but can help reduce the risk of sunburns. Talk to Your DermatologistObviously, this is not a complete list of skin care natural products you can use to help keep your skin healthy. However, before trying just any ‘all-natural’ product recommendation you find on your internet search, make sure you always consult with your dermatologists to find out the best treatment options for your specific skin type and conditions. Via https://frontrangedermatology.net/5-natural-skin-care-products/ Living With Eczema: Minimizing Triggers And Effective Treatment TipsEczema, a condition also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin disorder and major dermatology problem. Although this condition is most common in infants and young children, millions of American adults also suffer from eczema. While eczema is certainly treatable, it is not completely curable. Eczema patients are typically prone to flare-ups of the disease. These flares can cause itching, burning, rashes, and sensitivity. The resulting rash can also be unsightly and cause social embarrassment. The key to successfully managing your eczema is to understand your flare triggers and seek the care of dermatology professionals like the physicians at Front Range Dermatology in Fort Collins, CO. Additionally, here are some useful tips to keep your eczema under control. Tip #1 Always HydrateDry skin and eczema flares go hand in hand. You need to keep your skin hydrated and protected to avoid eczema symptoms. Lotions and drinking plenty of water are excellent methods of keeping your skin moist. Also, protect yourself from cold, dry air by wearing adequate protective clothing. Remember, alcohol can cause dehydration, so avoid overdoing it on the drinks. Plain water is always the best beverage of choice. If you have questions about the best lotions and moisturizers for your eczema, do not hesitate to consult the dermatology providers at Front Range Dermatology. Tip #2 Avoid Hot Baths and ShowersA hot shower on a frigid winter morning can feel wonderful but is not the best choice for those with eczema. Heat and humidity rob your skin of protective oils and can lead to dried out skin and eczema flares. There is no need to subject yourself to freezing baths, though. Lukewarm water will do just fine. Furthermore, hot baths or showers actually make you feel colder in the long term. Hot water and steam cause your skin pores to open. Then, once you step outside into a freezing Fort Collins winter, your open pores are hit with the chilled air, freezing you to the bone. Tip #3 Consider Your ClothingIn addition to choosing clothing that protects from the wind and cold, you should also be aware of eczema flares triggered by your choice of fabric. Some individuals find that certain materials, like wool or polyester, irritate their skin and cause eczema flares. If this is the case for you, do not hesitate to change your garment habits. Also, consider that overly tight or restrictive clothing may be contributing to your eczema flares. Dermatology experts recommend that you avoid any clothing that may chafe or hold sweat against your skin. Additionally, be sure to immediately change out of sweaty or wet clothing, including swimsuits. Tip #4 Use Specialized ProductsRegular grocery store bar soap and skin lotion are just fine for some eczema patients. If you are not having eczema flares or difficulties, there is no need to change your skin care products. However, some people with severe or recalcitrant eczema may need to switch to dermatology products specifically designed to treat eczema. Some of these types of products may require a prescription. If you are encountering difficulty controlling your eczema, you should make an appointment with the dermatology doctors at Front Range Dermatology right away. They can perform an examination and tests to determine the best medications and products for your eczema. Tip #5 Talk with Your DermatologistEczema can be a complex disease. The symptoms may range from mild and barely noticeable to so severe that they impact your quality of life. If you are running into roadblocks managing your eczema on your own, it is time to see a dermatology provider. Frequent use of over the counter medications is one sign that you need to make a dermatology appointment. It is fine to use hydrocortisone or other non-prescription topical medications from time to time, but a dermatology healthcare expert should manage the continued use of even over the counter creams. This monitoring is a good practice because even low-strength medications may cause side effects over time. Also, everyone should see a dermatologist at least annually, whether they have eczema or not. A dermatology appointment is a crucial part of skin cancer screening as well as preventative skin care. Front Range Dermatology is happy to meet all your dermatology needs. The post Treating Eczema: 5 Actionable Tips appeared first on Front Range Dermatology Associates.
